What is the connection between CECA and this great author? A ship named " Jules Verne ". This was the first big European methane carrier, back in the 1960s, operated by Gaz de France. France's largest ship in 1965, it was commissioned for the Algeria - France line (ARZEW - LE HAVRE), and in mid-1965 unloaded in the port of Le Havre its "25,000 m3 " of liquefied natural gas from the Hassi Messaoud field via Arzew.
For the record, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is transported at atmospheric pressure at a temperature of -160°C. This temperature is maintained by confining the liquefied gas in tanks fitted with a cryogenic insulator. This is where CECA and the added value from its Perliting team come into play.
A new development for CECA: the Perliting team takes its first steps with this project, and successfully completes the cryogenic insulation of the methane carrier using expanded perlite, in the Trait shipyard (Seine Maritime) in France. This was the first of what was to be a long line of methane insulation contracts for CECA.
What about the " Jules Verne " ? Well, you may still be able to catch its silhouette, we hear, on the ocean waves in the Far East…
