Emulsion Formula

Composition of our surface dressing

The role of the bitumen emulsion in the surface dressing is to bond the aggregate onto the support and make the road waterproof.

The dressing is generally laid at a temperature of between 30 and 70°C.

The binder content of the emulsions ranges from 60 to 69%, and their viscosity is such that the binder does not run to the lowest point in the road.

The speed of the break depends on the choice and dosage of emulsifier. The various grades of emulsion that can be produced are rated on the basis of the chosen break speed.

CECA recommends the following emulsifiers for these applications:

  • Dinoram S®
  • Dinoram SL®
  • Dinoram 3590®
  • Emulsamine L60®
  • Emulsamine L70®

Typical formulation for single surface dressing:
Penetration bitumen 70-100; 69 % emulsion; break index 70
CECA Emulsamine L60 ®: 2.2 kg/tonne of emulsion
aqueous phase pH = 2.0
6/10 chippings: 8 to 9 litres/m2;

dosage of emulsion: 1.5 kg/m2
